1972 BMW R50/5 Chrome Toaster Tank Motorcycle, short wheelbase
$17,500
1972 BMW R50/5 Chrome Toaster Tank Motorcycle, short wheelbase
After 24 years of ownership (purchased April, 2000 in British Columbia, Canada) I’m selling my ‘toaster tanker’ 1972 BMW R50/5.
Bike was registered in BC from 1972 until bringing it with me to Australia in 2016. We are moving back to Canada. I wish to sell this to someone who appreciates this classic motorcycle.
The /5s were the first bikes (R50, 60 & 75) produced at BMW’s new Spandau Berlin factory (opened in 1969 - with government incentives, to help keep West Berlin alive behind the Iron Curtain). They are the first of the robust ‘modern’ airheads with pushrods below the cylinders, produced in various sizes & iterations until 1997.
The R50/5 is particularly rare worldwide (only 8,000 were produced, vs 38,000 of the R75/5), the chome tanks even rarer (made for the North American market: BMW types at the time apparently sniffed at smaller chrome tank vs the regular one - last laugh on them!) and there are very few examples in Australia (only the R60 and R75 were sold here at the time).
This bike inspired the 50th Anniversary retro ‘Monza Blue’ R nineT/5 of a few years ago.
I had it on regular and classic plates in BC (which I can sell with the bike). It is on club plates in Victoria.
This is an original, unmolested bike. 48,000 original miles. Speedo in mph. Has the original points ignition system. Original, reliable slide carbs. New battery. Original tool kit. As can be seen on the photos, the seat has a number of tears which I’ve not repaired; these are black bear claw marks (true story, it was parked at Soda Creek/Xatsull, BC, overlooking the Fraser River when a bear clambered up the embankment and put its front paws on seat!). It runs fine. It’s a classic and turns heads. But its also a solid, reliable bike, that can still be used for getting around (I explored much of Victoria with it). Have a number spare parts including its chrome seat holder.
Price is negotiable. I am keen on selling it to someone who will love it at as much as I did.

This Harley-Davidson Sportster XL1200 is a great cruiser that mixes performance with comfort. The decently powered 1199cc V-Twin engine produces 50.4 horsepower and 84 newton metres of torque, this translates into a bike capable of doing any speed with ease, and has seen a low 21,000km with plenty of life left to give. The Sportsters offers a comfortable ride, with a low seat height, and light handling, making this agile enough for experienced riders as well as beginners. This Sportster XL883 is a great example of a mid-range American-made cruiser. The reasonably powered 45-degree v-twin motor produces just shy of 50 horsepower and roughly 85-newton meters of torque. This translates into a bike that has a decent top speed and has a great amount of low-end grunt. The motor has seen 45,000 kilometers and will remain reliable for many more years. The black on chrome colour scheme makes for one appealing bike, and the Screaming Eagle pipes are sure to gain some atte$8,290Airport West, VIC•2d - HARLEY DAVIDSON SP FULL CUSTOM BUILD 09
