Dog Grooming service - Westie specialist
West Highland White Terrier - registered breeder & groomer. Early puppy grooming tricks to make sure your Westie grows up enjoying being groomed.
Specialised Westie grooming, but able to clip and groom other breeds.
I have been grooming our dogs (and their pups) ever since we got our first Westie nearly 20 years ago. I learnt how to hand strip and trim faces with our first boy and girl so that we could show them. And now I do a mix of clipping and stripping on our dogs and their pups who come back for regular grooming.
With its double coat, a Westie really benefits from proper, regular grooming. Clipping is a much easier maintenance but needs to be done regularly to keep your Westie looking and feeling their best. Clipping removes the hard outer coat and leaves a soft coat behind which is easy to maintain with regular clippings and washing. Most Westies are so 'vigorous' when they are out and about walking that their nails are worn down on the concrete paths etc, but often their dew claws need to be trimmed and it's a good idea to trim the hair between their foot pads to stop matting, grass seed etc getting caught and causing sores. It's also a good idea to remove hair from the inside of their ears to allow the air to circulate in their ears and have less chance of getting bacteria infections or mites.
For a clip, trim nails, haircut the face to a ‘chrysanthemum’ round, layered shaped head with just the tips of the ears exposed (all of which usually takes about 1.5 hours) and costs $60. Dogs that come for clips should ideally be washed prior or I can also offer a wash and blow dry service for an additional fee of $20.
Traditional hand stripping pulls out dead hair leaving a true double coat with hard outer coat, helps the skin breathe and we find it is easier to keep them clean as the sand and dirt just brushes out once they are dry. If you prefer the traditional hard coat feel, then a full hand strip is what you looking for which takes longer but results in the true Westie look. Depending on how your Westie has been groomed to date, will depend on whether this is an option as it takes a few months for the hard outer coat to start growing through if the coat has been fully clipped. For a "fully-blown" coat - I would estimate it would cost between $160- $200 to do a full hand strip, trim and groom as it can take up to 3 hours depending on how thick the coat is and how the dog copes. Usually I try to rotate stripping my dogs so that they get a bit of work done on them every couple of weeks to avoid long grooming sessions where they get restless.
I am also happy to show anyone how to trim and keep your Westie tidy in between full grooms. You only need a couple of things like a brush and comb and it’s so much fun to learn how groom your own dog - it does take time & effort but your Westie will find your attentions most entertaining !😊
Westies know when they are looking their best. They truly are a big dog in a small body!
- Fully body clip, face trim & shape, feet trim, nails (if necessary) - $60
- Bath & blow dry - $20 (they need to be clean prior to clipping and we can wash them if you don't like washing them yourself)
- Full handstrip, face trim & shape - can quote individually depending on the state of the coat but usually between $160 - $200
Am available for bookings most times during the week and sometimes on weekends.
