‘ It was a day to remember. In memory, comparable to Queen Elizabeth's first visit to Australia and the opening of the Melbourne Olympic Games. Celebrating two hundred years of modern Australia and, specifically, two hundred years since the establishment of Sydney as an outpost of Europe on
"the finest harbour in the universe".
Queen Elizabeth's son, Prince Charles, observed "As history goes, two hundred years is barely a heartbeat" but it was sufficient excuse for the biggest party Sydney has ever thrown.
Two million people thonged the foreshores, specks of flag-waving, suncreamed and behatted humanity in a vast abstract mosaic.
On the harbour they took to the water in everything from ocean-going boozers to the smallest dinghies and skiffs.
And somewhere amidst all that good-humoured mayhem was the intrepid Australian Women's Weekly photographic team.

We had thirteen staff photographers on duty that day and their efforts have here been supplemented by some other freelancers. They were on helicopters, on pylons, on boats, on light portable ladders, at Mrs Macquarie's Chair and amongst the madding crowd, in the heat fighting for the best vantage points and the best angles against the undertow of the people around.
When the battle was done they had taken over 3000 spectacular pictures, which our art team took four days to sort through and winnow down to the 137 images produced in this superb book.
The effort, I think you will agree, was worth it. Here is a brilliant memento of that glorious occasion, a permanent reminder, if we needed it, that while Australians come from many antecedents they are nonetheless united in their ability to enjoy a grand celebration, particularly when it falls on a bright summer's day.
