CITY BEAT BY GRAHAM BLONDEL
Artist: Graham Blondel
Title: City Beat
Medium: Oil on Canvas, Aluminum Frame
Date painted: *****1986
Signed: G B 85/86 ( Graham Blondel)
Size: 185 cm X 130 cm (72" X 50")
Gallery Price Estimate: $7,000 - $8,000
How do you decipher the title of this painting, let alone the concept? Graham Blondel will not give you a singular answer and would suggest that the complex relationships of image to image offers a glimpse of his intent
If you read between the dots, you can decipher the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Botanical gardens. A riot of colour, geometry and movement!! Sydney in summer. A vibriant array of colour, movement and dynamic City Beat.
Graham Blondel was born in 1949 and trained at the National Art School in Sydney, Australia and undertook further post graduate studies and was awarded a Master of fine Art from the University of New South Wales. .He has travelled and worked extensively overseas, always with an eye to absorbing the culture and history of the places visited. His paintings are in many collections both in Australia and overseas.
He has had an extensive 35 year teaching career and has won many awards for painting. He has exhibited in Paris, New York & Ohio (USA) and all over Australia. His awards include the SMH Heritage Award ( twice), the Arthur Boyd studio in Tuscany, Italy, the Art Gallery of NSW studio in Paris and a residency with Redgate Gallery, Beijing in 2003. His late 2006 exhibition of works, created in Paris and New York ( with the support of Columbia University, New York ) at the Pearl Street Gallery, Brooklyn, was called " Off the Streets ". Some of his paintings were hung in the foyer of the Sydney Opera House in July 2007. He has curated many exhibitions including a contemporary Aboriginal art exhibition at Columbia University, a testimony to his curatorial skills. His personal interest and passion for Australian Aboriginal Art culminated in an exhibition of his own personal Aboriginal collection at the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in NSW, Australia.
" I make art because of a compulsive need to decipher my contemporary global world and to comment on its absurdities, politics and humanity–or the lack of it. Deconstructing and reconstructing information into collages, paintings and sculptures is often meant to slyly satirize my life’s circumstances in a schizophrenic indifferent world. Despite a post-Pop sensibility, the emphasis on color and patterning, which has been a career long interest, tends to give my work a more complex layered dimension. Although I am based in Sydney, Australia, when working in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Beijing or elsewhere, I find reasons to see what we all have in common rather than that which separates us. It is art that makes a difference to what we see." Graham Blondel
Blondel's paintings and sculptures are a celebration of life's complexities and absurdities. Humor as a vehicle for the regeneration of the spirit is definitely a part of his purpose along with his obsession with colour and pattern, essentially the core of his art and used to highlight the state of today's visual pollution and the dumbing down of our culture. His work is a critique on the fine line between that which is crass and the world of the beautiful.
"City Beat" re-enforces his unusual graphic and eye popping style and is a great example of his colour and pattern obsession. You can clearly see his interpretation of the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and the Botanical Gardens which dominate this painting. It has an indigenous feel to it
