Australians were still fighting in Vietnam, Gough Whitlam was an Opposition Leader, and the Easybeats were still together when Melbourne’s Kingsley Radio made this little portable record player in 1968. Australia was on the cusp of change, and Kingsley themselves (who had been in existence in one form or another since 1934) were sadly destined to shut their doors just three years later, this was one of their last designs.
The KP301 is a simple but stylish manual record player with 4 speeds and a whole heap of charm. The 7 inch platter can accommodate all record sizes, and has all four speeds, 16rpm, 33rpm, 45rpm, and 78rpm. (The unit is fitted with a “flipover stylus”, one side suitable for playing modern records, the other suitable for playing old school 78s.)
The inbuilt transistorised amplifier drives an up facing speaker, and is also fitted with a tone control, something that wasn’t present on the model beneath this one in Kingsley’s lineup.
When shut the little vinyl covered case of this fully restored 1968 beauty has a footprint of 290mm x 340mm, and a height of 140mm.
