Back as far as the 70s the American company Weller dominated the professional electronics soldering market world wide, due in no small part to their fabulous W-TCP low voltage soldering station, a system that provided precise temperature regulation (either 600°F/316°C, 700°F/371°C, or 800°F/427°C) by the use of an ingenious tip that changes its magnetic properties when the programmed temperature is attained, in turn deactivating a switch in the handle that controls the low voltage heating element. Weller referred to the system as “closed loop” temperature control.
The easily changed tips came (and still do come) in a range of profiles, with the choice of three different temperatures displayed on the tip base, simply by number 6, 7, or 8.
For the first time electronics professionals had an iron that was quick to heat (just 11 seconds from switch on in the case of a 700° tip), maintained temperature perfectly as it was being used, and could easily have different tips changed in for different applications.
In the late 70s the original W-TCP station was upgraded in design to the WTCPN station (comprised of the TC201 soldering iron, and TC202 transformer base / stand), using the exact same system. Later still, the model morphed into this one, the WTCPTD station which could have the iron stand set to the left or right of the transformer unit.
Weller no longer manufactures stations using this ultra reliable original technology, and that’s a shame.
This particular example was manufactured in Australia in the year 2000. It has a couple of battle scars, but overall is in very good condition. It works perfectly, has been fitted with a brand new genuine Weller PTA-7 tip, and a new sponge.
Included:
• Weller TC202DT2 230Vac – 24Vac base
• Iron holder
• Sponge
• Weller TC201B Soldering iron fitted with new PTA-7 tip
• Manual copy
