Every now and then you come across something a little bit special. This unbranded musical instrument amplifier was hand built to order for a professional musician in 1960. It looks striking, and sounds superb following its full refurbishment.
It uses all valve technology (tubes for those who have succumbed to Americanisation!) driving into a sensitive alnico magnet 12” Rola brand speaker. The output configuration is “ultra linear push pull”, delivering about 17 watts.
For those interested in the valve line up:
• 5U4 full wave rectifier
• EF86 pre-amplifier
• 12AX7 phase inverter / driver
• 6BQ5 (EL84) x 2 output pentodes
No fancy features here – two 6.35mm input sockets (both in parallel), a volume control, plus two “boost” type tone controls, one to boost bass, one to boost treble.
The enclosure is covered in the textured vinyl that was so popular in the 60s, finished in a fawn shade. Matching period grille cloth (striped with metallic flecks) and a top handle completes the look. The unit comes with a heavy duty cover in which it has spent its life – that explains why this 70 year old product has hardly a blemish!
The chassis with valves, power transformer, choke, and large output transformer visible is mounted in the base of the unit.
The unit has a footprint of 450mm x 300mm, and stands 500mm high.
Simply beautiful valve sound, that satisfying orange glow, and unique aesthetics. A rare product from another generation. What an addition to any studio or music space.
Sale includes heavy duty cover, professional 6.35mm – 6.35mm lead.
