Old Billy's Enchanted Valley by Bruce Peardon Mouth Painter
$5
Vintage book. A wonderful story written and beautifully illustrated by Mouth & Foot Painting Artist, the late Bruce Peardon. A hard cover children’s book with 28 full colour paintings. Has some age related marks hence reduced price
Beautiful illustrations, particularly of the birds - a kingfisher in particular -, by mouth painter Bruce Peardon and the lovely story has a message along with it.
The crux of the story is a grandfather kangaroo telling the enchanted story of Old Billy's Valley to his young joey kangaroo grandson. He tells how Old Billy came along to resurrect an old ramshackle farmhouse and to plant trees, all the while playing his 'beautiful music'.
Grandfather explains to little joey how people can ruin the environment by interfering with Nature too much and he gives an example by telling of the first farmers who came to the valley and cut down nearly all the trees. Little joey asks where the birds went when there were no trees and grandfather had to tell him that they all disappeared because there was nowhere for them to build their nests.
Little joey then asks about the kangaroos and grandfather explains what happened to them; they initially ate the farmers' food so they were driven away by the farmers. A lack of rain exacerbated the problems while insects and mice (there is a gorgeous painting of a field mouse) wiped out just about everything that the farmers had planted.
Grandfather explains lots more about the eco system and with little joey's many questions he has to paint an explicit picture of what happened. Then, he explains, along came Old Billy to restore the countryside to what it should be. In addition Old Billy brought along some large boxes and out of them popped 'possums, koalas, echidnas, bandicoots and a variety of other animals. Grandfather says that when the other animals were spotted, the kangaroos went along to meet them and that was when the valley began to change back to how it once was.
Grandfather explains that eventually Old Billy died and his musical instruments were left just as he had last used them as none of the other humans seemed to want them. But the animals did want them and they kept them to use themselves ... and that is just what grandfather, along with a koala and a possum did. They formed a trio and played beautiful music. This attracted the birds and the glade was filled with happy sounds and the valley was back to its old enchanted self.
