Grøndahl, a figurine maker for the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory, and the Bing brothers, art and book dealers, created Bing & Grndahl on April 15, 1853. The factory was on the corner of Vesterbrogade and Rahbek Allé in the Vesterbro neighbourhood of Copenhagen, Denmark, during the time. Grøndahl started the company to make biscuit porcelain figurines based on Bertel Thorvaldsen's neo-classical sculptures. Elegant dinnerware and coffee sets were added to the company's product line. Designer Fanny Garde created the company's distinctive design, Seagull, in 1892. Seagull design was considered the "National Service of Denmark" from the 1950s through the 1980s due of its popularity. During that time, one in every ten Danish houses possessed some of the dinnerware. Bing & Grøndahl produced the first of their Christmas plates in 1895. The plates, which feature a typical winter scene in cobalt blue and white, have been issued annually for more than a century. Under the name Royal Copenhagen, the company amalgamated with its main competitor, the Royal Porcelain Factory, in 1987. The tea service designed by Gertrud Vasegaard in 1956 was named a masterpiece of Danish design by the Danish Culture Canon. Collectible Vintage Cobalt Blue Plate is in Excellent Condition.
