29-Volume Set comes with gorgeous covers with just a slight sign of use. Encyclopedias were first marketed door-to-door to families that wished to provide their children with educational benefits as well as status symbols. The Standard Dictionary of the English Language was released in two volumes in 1893 and 1895, while Funk & Wagnalls Standard Encyclopedia was published in 1912. Isaac K. Funk oversaw the publication of the New Standard Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language in 1913. From 1925 to 1940, Wilfred J. Funk, Isaac Funk's son, served as the company's president. Unicorn Press acquired the rights to publish the encyclopaedia, and by 1953, the company was selling it through a supermarket continuity marketing effort, encouraging customers to add the most recent volume to their shopping lists. Dun & Bradstreet sold Funk & Wagnalls, Inc. to a group of Funk & Wagnalls executives in 1984, and Field Corporation bought it in 1988. The World Almanac was purchased by Funk & Wagnalls Corporation in 1993 after being sold to K-III Holdings, Inc in 1991. After failing to secure the rights to the text of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the World Book Encyclopedia for their Encarta digital encyclopaedia, Microsoft resorted to using the text of Funk & Wagnalls for the first editions.
