Shorter and Son was first set up by Arthur Shorter in 1878 with a partner James Boulton in Stoke on Trent. A short time later, he purchased the business, and Colley, Arthur's son, joined him in 1898. Guy, his younger son, joined his father and Colley at Wilkinson's in 1905 after taking over as manager at Shorter's in 1900. Clarice Cliff, then 17 years old, began working as a decorator at Wilkinsons the same year Colley and Guy were appointed to the position of directors. She created her new, bold geometric forms that are so evocative of the Art Deco era after being given permission to experiment with vintage Newport Pottery shapes. As Arthur Shorter passed away in 1926, his sons felt more liberated to create the products for their companies in a more daring manner. By hiring the designer Mabel Leigh, who in just two short years with them produced a vast and interesting variety of "Period Pottery," Shorter's earned a further creative boost in the 1930s. While she departed the company in 1935, the designs were so popular that they were kept in production for many more years. After his first wife passed away in 1940, Colley married Clarice Cliff, who later rose to the position of artistic director at the group of potteries. The Midwinter Company gained ownership of Wilkinson and Newport after Clarice Cliff-Shorter sold the family shares.
