Aboriginal Artist SABINA NUNGALA,
Picture #1 Sabina Gorey Nungala is a self-taught Artist who comes from a strong family tradition of the North Eastern Anmatyerre painters. Sabina's most popular painting illustrates Women's Ceremony and Bush Bananas. Sabina grew up surrounded by habitual routine of painting and began painting herself as a teenager. Aboriginal Women have their own Ceremonies in which a series of song and dance cycles tell of the Ancestral beings who walked the earth teaching Women's Law and Ceremony to isolated groups living throughout the desert. East tribe has its own set of Women Ancestors with different stories, designs and dances but most of them have one common theme to all groups, food gathering, as it is the most important part of their lives. The song and dance mainly revolve around bush tucker, such as bush banana, wild tomatoes, plums, honey ants, witchety grubs, nuts and berries. In their paintings they depict the implements they use including digging sticks, grinding stones and coolamons. A U shape represents a person or group of people sitting down with crossed legs. The concentric circles are waterholes or fire.
Picture page 2 #Christine Burarrwa Aboriginal Artist Yolngu Tribe .
Christine Burarrwa Aboriginal Artist & author.
Such a talented woman helping others.
A Yolngu woman deeply connected to her culture, Christine has inherited her artistic style from her mother which comes from her ancestors’ knowledge, lore and stories.
Christine has also released a book, with Lucy Van Sambeek, called “The Life of Tree.” This children’s therapeutic picture book creates a culturally safe space for Aboriginal children to express difficult emotions around their experiences with family violence.
Through their organization ‘Metaphorically Speaking’, Christine offers culturally safe counselling and therapeutic services to Aboriginal women, children, and families using both Western counselling methodologies and traditional Aboriginal healing methods.
Christine is deeply connected to her Country and culture, inheriting her mother’s Dreaming stories that focuses on the various bush foods that are both traditionally hunted, celebrated in ceremony and connected to the Dreamtime creation spirits. Beyond their value as a food source, animals serve as cultural images of totemic power which are used to demonstrate connection to country and the ongoing presence of the ancestors/ancestral beings. As with songlines, animal tracks such as Budgerigar, Possum, and Emu are used to map country and delineate custodial responsibilities, laws and ancestry.
