FAQ:
What's the difference between Compost Worms and Earth Worms?
Compost Worms: An adapted species of Earth Worm which thrives in warm, moist conditions with lots of food. They feed on Organic (compostable) material near the soil surface and can eat 1/2 of there body weight every day! They reproduce faster than Earthworm. Purchased from a breeder and usually kept in a worm farm.
Earth Worms: Feed on decayed compostable material and burrow it underground. Can survive in most environments and with little amounts of food. Commonly found in backyards. Reproduce slowly.
Does a Worm Farm Smell?
If looked after correctly a worm farm should have no smell.
Best way to ensure no nasty smells is to feed compost worms small amounts which they can eat within a week or so and bury it in bedding. Regularly aerate worm farm (mix bedding material up so its fluffy) and avoid food which worms dont like such as onion, citrus, meat and dairy - this will rot when not eaten and produce foul odours.
What if I go on holiday?
Feed and add extra bedding material before you leave. Ensure worm farm is in a cool location, bedding is moist (when squeezed a few drops of liquid should drip), and tap to release liquid is open. Compost Worms can survive for 4-6 weeks without fresh food.
How did The Planet Project Co. start?
I began this project a few years ago to tackle the large amount of organic (compostable) waste thrown into landfill everyday particularly in the hospitality industry that I work in. I saw local cafes and restaurants throwing many bags full of fruit and veggie scraps, used coffee grounds, and old paper menus into the garbage bin and wanted to do something about it. I hated seeing it go to landfill! So I started collecting them, I knew these materials could be composted or put in the worm farm. Today I have 20 worm farms and love sharing my passion for sustainable living!
