Pp. x, 394; 40 illustrations including frontispiece. Publisher’s original forest green cloth with pictorial scene with palm tree on the front cover, spine lettered in gilt and with ornate gilt decorations at the top and bottom of the spine, the front and rear cloth-covered boards have blind-stamped border decorations, brown clay-coated endpapers, 8vo. Though Bates collected in all areas, his work on Amazon butterflies is the foundational work for lepidoptera studies in South America. Rare work.
