We are an Educational Centre with a different, unique and effective approach to teaching and learning.
Our children today are not learning the basics as they should. Simple, basic language and maths skills are just not known.
The consequence of this is functionally illiterate adults in the workplace. For example, they do not have the ability to write simple letters or emails with correct punctuation and spelling, or do simple maths calculations with fractions, decimals and percentages.
We provide a one-on-one tutoring service in English to both children AND adults of all ages and nationalities. Each learning journey for our students starts with a personal consultation and assessment to ascertain the difficulty. This is followed by recommendations of the appropriate tutoring programme necessary to suit the needs of that student.
All our programmes are precisely structured to obtain the desired results.
Phonics Tutoring: Phonics is a method of teaching reading; it teaches that letters and combinations of letters represent specific sounds.
The Applied Scholastics Phonics Programme teaches students to read and write on the correct gradient. Great emphasis is placed on understanding the meanings of words, which results in increased confidence and true comprehension of what is being learned.
We provide tutoring to the student who is beginning to learn to read and write, and for the remedial student as well as adults.
If you are a parent, ask yourself these questions:
Can your child sound out the words he reads? Or does he:
Memorise them? Guess them? Work it out from the pictures?
Furthermore, can your child truly understand what he reads?
LET'S GO BACK TO BASICS
Most children learn the most common sounds of the letters of the alphabet, but they need a true understanding of how a single letter can have more than one sound. For example, did you know the letter “a” has many sounds?
ant many want fast ball baby
Children also need a thorough understanding of how two or more letters can represent just one sound:
book caught play bird thank ship eight phone bring
The above must be taught on the correct gradient or confusion will be inevitable. This will then result in a student who does poorly in the literacy area, and will develop a distaste for the subject and an unwillingness to learn.
We also focus on spelling, punctuation, letter formation and the correct pronunciation of words.
Creative Writing: There are so many aspects in being able to write a simple story.
Some children have so much trouble with writing. Some can get the words out onto the page describing what they’re trying to communicate, but their use of grammar and simple punctuation symbols are lacking. Other children have the technical aspect correct, however, they just can’t seem to create the words on the page from the ideas they have in their mind.
A story is an expression of a child’s creativeness, but so many skills need to be learned to achieve this.
Applied Scholastics has developed a new programme called the “Creative Writing Programme.” It teaches your children how to write a story the correct way.
The following topics are covered in detail:
- What is creative writing?
- What is a sentence?
- What is a paragraph?
- Punctuation
- Grammar
- Story structure
- Editing your work
Preparing for ATAR, NAPLAN and GATE: We have a very effective high school level writing programme that covers the basic and advanced techniques of essay writing. Throughout the course of all our tutoring and especially this programme, we increase vocabulary, comprehension and expression.
We invite you to contact us today and embark on a learning journey that will take you into a realm of certainty and confidence in your own abilities and that of your child.
