Antique Adams & Bromley Large 1880s Victorian Majolica Rams Head Jug

A superb large Adams & Bromley Victorian majolica Rams Head jug c1880 in excellent antique condition. While unmarked this is readily attributable to the Staffordshire firm of Adams and Bromley (1873 - 1886) at Victoria Works. John Adams grew up in the pottery trade. His father worked at Wedgwood where he also worked. The company enjoyed wide success both with their majolica and their jasperware selling both domestically and abroad. They exhibited in international exhibitions such as those in Paris and London, increasing their reputation for creating quality ware. In 1873 The company changed its name to Adams & Bromley and continued manufacturing large majolica.
Majolica ware is known for its vibrant and colourful glazes and this jug is a head turner, decorated in pastels including mauve, greens and yellow with pink tones in the interior. The front features a ram’s head with curving horns, and the green twisted handle ends at the back with the ram’s hooves. The neck is tied with a yellow ribbon.
In excellent antique condition, no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. Some very minor semi transparent glaze patches probably from time of manufacture, it is remarkably well preserved. Patch of glaze missing on bottom edge. The largest of the Rams Heads jugs it measures 23cms tall x 18cm at widest point x 13cm diam.

Cherry Improved Patent size 0 butter churn, an accompanying exquisite rabbit butter stamp plus a pair of butter pats or paddles. Edward Cherry (1830 - 1910) arrived in Australia from England in 1855 and began manufacturing butter churns in 1858. In 1875 he opened a factory in Gisborne, Victoria which traded as E.
