Antique Thonet Style Bentwood & Cane Childs High Chair VERY RARE
$180
Early rare 19th Century Thonet style bentwood and cane child’s high chair. With feeding tray and footrest, it is in good shape for its age and moves smoothly when lowering or raising the tray. This antique bentwood child's dinner chair was very likely made in the period immediately after the 1871 expiration of the original Thonet patents.
Bentwood chairs proved very popular in early Australian homes. Rather than transport heavy British style furniture to regional Australia, bentwoods were light, elegant, and inexpensive. The added benefit for remote settlers was that they were transported economically in parts and re-assembled. In addition they better suited the hotter climate of Australia and appeared in homes in all levels of society. This chair came from near a goldfields region where many people arrived and established homes in the mid to late 1800s. Children’s bentwood chairs were advertised in the catalogues of the day and were known to be popular gifts in 1878. Today very few remain.
Gorgeous display or collectors item especially for children’s bears and toys. Good antique condition, wear consistent with age and use. The seat surface has some buckles possibly from exposure to weather. This is an antique piece of furniture originally intended for use by a child and does not meet current safety standards for use. Cushion comes with the chair (not mini quilt or toys.) Measures approx. Height: 95 cm. Width: at widest point; 49 cm. Depth: 47 cm.
Also listed elsewhere. Due to size pick up required. (May be possible to bring to Melbourne or nearby regional city at cost.)
