Rare 1891 Doulton Burslem Royles Patent Aquarius Wash Jug
$150
SHIPPING OFFERED
A most unusual ‘Royles Patent Toilet Aquarius’ antique jug dated 1891 made by Royal Doulton Burslem. In production from 1891 - 1902 it features Doulton’s patented horizontal design in cream gloss earthenware decorated with paisley scrolls, vines and daisies, in blue, green and yellow. With unusually shaped ends the design charmingly resembles a woman’s neck and shoulders in a pretty Victorian dress. Originally supported by a cast iron holder, this stunning wide jug could be used as an intriguing planter/ jardiniere or eye catching display item.
Originally designed to tilt and pour into a basin it claimed to ease the heavy load of a pitcher. The advertisement from 1891 (pic. 7) says: ‘Toilet Aquarius, a new patented water container for wash stands where no muscular effort required. The water flows into the basin by simply pulling forward the handle. No lifting of a heavy jug. A Boon to Ladies and Invalids. A trouble-saver to Strong Men.’ Other information says that the jug could be placed in front of a fireplace to heat up the water prior to bathing.
Measures: 44cm x 27cm x 16cm, and of substantial weight, it is marked: Doulton Burslem England, TRADE MARK / ROYLE’S PATENT TOILET AQUARIUS, with a US registered trade mark, 5 - 91, registered number ‘R.N. 11549’ in a box, with a smaller R.N. 56418 below.
A talking point display item, the Aquarius jug is in fair to good antique condition with some small hairlines and crazing areas and a restored lip (see photos.) Not at all surprising considering it’s usefulness and age of 133 years.
Also advertised elsewhere.
