Vintage Heath Hezzanith Endless Tangent Screw Sextant RARE
$800
SHIPPING OFFERED
This eighty year old, WW2 era three-circle-patten frame sextant, or quintant to be more technically correct, epitomises British instrument making in the 20th century. This was the mainstay of Heath’s production during the period, they also made all the other components of their sextants whilst selling frames to other makers who then marked them with their names. They could be found on many ships in the British Merchant Navy.
This beautifully clean Heath and Co. Ltd., Hezzanith sextant, presented in a polished oak box, is complete with a telescope, sight tube, green shaded eye piece, the adjusting spike, the remains of the original chamois, the “Hezzanith” Instrument Works Certificate of Examination dated 1st of January 1942, a retailer’s label from Lilley and Reynolds of London and a Certificate of Examination from the same company dated the 11th of September 1958.
This instrument has obviously belonged to a careful individual - whose hand wear can be seen on the wooden handle - as there is only a minuscule amount of damage to the black lacquered brass frame and the optics are in excellent condition. The shades, seven in total, are varying densities of green; the mirrors are intact with only very slight ageing on the horizon glass.
The limb is bronze whilst the arc is silver; both the engraving on the arc and the vernier scale are clearly legible especially with the aid of the magnifier. The instrument number, G 376, which matches the number on the Certificate of Examination, is engraved above the maker’s name in the bronze. “Made in England” is also engraved on the left hand side of the limb. The bottom of the box has a narrow crack which does not extend for the full width. The lock is functional but does not have a key. I do have a key for my Hezzanith that also functions in this lock so we could get another one cut.
The National Maritime Museum Greenwich in London also holds one of these rare instruments.
