SHIPPING OFFERED
Collection of 5 antique original early 19th century small hand coloured aquatint etchings of satirical cartoons by the famous English artist and caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson (1756 - 1827) that I'm selling as one lot. They were all published by Rudolph Ackermann at 101, Strand, London in the Regency period between 1814 and 1821.
The earliest of the etchings is 'The Hunter Unkennelled' from the series 'The English Dance of Death' published in 1814. This is a deliciously macabre comic image of Death as a skeleton catching up with his quarry, a huntsman who is trying to hide from him under a table. It has been slightly trimmed on the margin edges and measures 23.5 x 13cm.
The other etchings are from the first edition of 'The Third Tour of Dr Syntax, in Search of a Wife' published in 1820 to 1821. The Dr Syntax series ridiculed the 'polite society' of the English Regency era and they were very popular with the mass of people who weren't part of it. The 4 titles are 'Dr Syntax Setting Out in Search of a Wife', 'Introduction to Courtship', 'The Result of Purchasing a Blind Horse' and 'The Death of Punch'. Three of these are 24 x 15cm and the first one of the doctor on his horse is slightly trimmed to 20.5 x 15cm.
These rare etchings are now over 200 years old and they have age related wear including browning of the edges and very old small hand written prices in the margins. I've kept the price low and they will look great framed up. Please examine all the photos carefully and contact me if you have any questions. Pick up from Kensington NSW 2033 in Sydney Eastern Suburbs.
I'm downsizing and also selling original 1910s and 1920s French Art Deco pochoirs, framed prints and a variety of other items. I have eclectic tastes so please check out my other ads while you're here to see more unique finds. Thanks for looking.
