$100
SHIPPING OFFERED
Rare original hand coloured stencilled pochoir lithograph 'L'Arbre Merveilleux' or The Marvellous Tree' by the French Art Deco artist and illustrator Charles Martin (1884 - 1934) from the January 1914 issue of the legendary Parisian fashion magazine La Gazette du Bon Ton. The pochoir is signed by the artist in the image and printed on thick high quality Verges paper and the page measures approximately 25 cm x 19 cm.
The image shows children in fancy dress costumes gazing up in wonder at an enormous Christmas tree decorated with candles and toys and we can just see a parent's hand at the top lighting the candles. It's a charming scene and the artist has included some unexpected and humorous details. The image has lovely vivid colours with metallic gold embellishments on the tree and it's perfect for a lover of Art Deco style and illustration.
La Gazette du Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris between 1912 and 1925 with a break during the First World War. Each luxurious limited edition issue included several fashion plates that were individually hand coloured using stencils in what was known as the 'pochoir' process. The images were designed by the leading illustrators of the day and they are now highly collectable.
This is a delightful early Art Deco picture in very good antique condition with minor age wear that will frame up beautifully. Please examine the photos carefully and contact me if you have any questions. Pick up from Kensington NSW 2033 in Sydney Eastern Suburbs.
