'Inigo Jones' - Architect of Kings by Vaughan Hart in good condition.
The blurb:- Inigo Jones [1573 - 1652] is widely acknowledged to have been England's most important architect. As the court designer to the Stuart kings, James I and Charles I, he is credited with introducing the classical language of architecture to the country. Jones designed such seminal works as the Banqueting House at Whitehall, the Queen's House at Greenwich and the Queen's Chapel at St James's Palace. He famously travelled to Italy and studied at first hand the buildings of the Italian masters, and admired in particular those by Andrea Palladio. Jones came to be seen as the quintessential English Palladian, and he was even awarded the title 'Vitruvius Britannicus' soon after his death.
Much less well known is Jones's hostility to the more opulent forms of Italian architecture which he witnessed on his travels. In emphasising his admiration for Italy, the profound influence on him of native arts and crafts has also largely gone unnoted. This book, by the architectural historian Vaughan Hart, examines this hostility and these English influences...
Contents pages are shown in photos 3 & 4 [can be enlarged to make easier to read]. And please excuse the light glare from the top left washing out the colour in some photos.
308 pages. Published for The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in Britsh Art by Yale University Press in 2011 [looks like a First Edition]. ISBN 978-0-300-14149-8. [Approx 29 x 23 x 3.2cms & 1865g].
This well illustrated and informative hardback is in good condition with pages clean and tightly bound. Exterior shows signs of use/storage as per photos 1 & 10 including scratches to the back of the dust cover, bending/creasing along the top and bottom edges of the dust cover as well as a couple of small nicks at the bottom corners of the spine, a few lightish marks to the closed edges of the pages and some light spotting along the top edge of the closed paged. That all sounds like a lot since I try to mention all faults, but aside from the cosmetic effects to the exterior, the contents are fine with nothing to interfere with enjoying this book.
Also have some other art related books listed separately at present.
Please note:-
- Inspections welcome.
- Best to phone [three&two+zero&nine+seven&one+eight&two] if you are keen to collect. I don't use a mobile and often only get to check messages late in the evening, so please check your email for replies [they sometimes end up in your Spam folder].
- No Paypal [sorry]
