adv. Strelitzia nicolai. 2m tall, 6-7 branches. Growing 6 years.
$80
This strelitzia is ~2m tall and has 6 branches with the 7th branch just unfurling. The plant has been growing for ~6 years, it is an advanced plant.
Indoors, it needs a bright spot, ideally close to a window. Not enough light makes it vulnerable to rotting. Outdoors best in part shade but can be adapted to sunnier spots if done during in winter season.
Outdoors best to keep out of windy spots.
Leaf spliting is quite normal and occurs as the leaf matures which is essential to allow light and air to access the lower portion of the plant, or if you are in a windy area.
It is a very slow grower, and outdoors it can grow up to 6m, but will be happy in a pot for many years, growing even slower if you have it indoors.
Moist but not soggy soil for watering needs (it will get stem and root rot if over watered) and allow it to dry out slightly between waterings.
Indoors, you need to wipe down the leaves every now and again to avoid mealy bugs. Just use a water mister and damp cloth. A bit of slow release fertiliser every few months during growing season (now).
Grown by gardener with 40yrs experience.

Unfortunately, it's very close to my mango and they both can't fit in that space. The trunk is straight, but you can see it's got a lean in the photos from being flattened, which is easily corrected when replanting. Some of the old leaves have gone a little crispy as it's not used to seeing the sun. But all the new growth since it stepped into the light is very encouraging and healthy.
