J. C. GOODHART 1875 to 1954 German Charlie's Shanty, Silverton
$350 Negotiable
J.C. (Joseph Christian) Goodhart (1875 to 1954) German Charlie's Shanty, Silverton 1927
Etching & aquatint printed in black and grey inks on paper
Plate: 15.4 x 20 cm approximately
Condition: The paper is yellowed and there are numerous small foxing marks. A corner on the mount is watermarked but this has not affected the print.
The print would benefit from a replacement of the mount and reframing.
Goodhart was born at Gilberton, South Australia and educated at St Peter's College. His education was cut short by the death of his parents. He left school to work at John Martin's department store. Shortly after marrying in 1900, the young couple moved to Broken Hill, N.S.W. where he worked for Boan Bros drapers. Goodhart had always been interested in art and began to make etchings in the mid-1920s. His talent was quickly recognised. His focus on subject matter around Broken Hill, particularly the mines, is perhaps what he is best known for.
He exhibited in the Paris Salon, April, 1929 and was a finalist in the Archibald Prize, 1946 with a portrait study of Sir Donald Bradman.
The Art Gallery of South Australia holds an example of German Charlie's Shanty. He is also represented in the National Gallery of Victoria and reputedly in the White House Collection, Washington D.C. after being acquired by President Hoover who had worked in Australia in the mining industry.
