3. Supplied with the Wharfedale 8/145 (15 ohm) $950
The following text is an extract from “A pair of Wharfedale’s” by David Briggs
The original design of the Column Eight is shown in the photo below, the horizontal slots of the top portion were soon replaced by a mesh. In this part of the cabinet -which is not supplied with a drive unit- was a metal diffuser which gave 360- degree high frequency output in the horizontal plane with little effect on the vertical output. The acoustic filter was also incorporated. A special drive unit the 8/145 (a modified Super 8 /FS/AL) was developed to suit the cabinet and recommended for use therein. The column was 44in tall with a cross section of 14 x 12 inches. The basic details of the design had actually come from the Netherlands they were sent to Gilbert by a Mr H Bach of Trianon.
About these speakers.
The columns were built locally by a master cabinet maker in 1960. They are very well built and follow the plan shown in the photo. Internally they are lined with a thick layer of wool. The top section lifts off to provide easy access to the speaker baffle. The metal diffuser is chromed. The top section mesh is brass and very high quality. The cabinets are very well built from plywood and the exterior has been French polished. The cabinets have some marks as you would expect since they are nearly 65 years old.
The Goodman’s Axiettes were designed by Ted Jordan and are the first true Full-range HiFi speaker (1955) They are in excellent condition and work perfectly.
The Wharfedale 8/145 have new foam surrounds and work perfectly. They have slight visual differences. These speakers were often sold as singles. Today both Axiettes and 8/145 are increasing in value.
These speakers set up with a quality valve amp simply disappear and they like the W2 offered in a separate sale excel with voice, acoustic instruments, and jazz. They also produce a surprising bass considering they only have one driver.
A truly unique speaker system and would suit an audio hobbyist.
They are set up with the 8/145 which is how they work at their best.
Thanks for your interest.
