Indian Runner Breed information
Unlike other ducks, the Indian Runner does not waddle but rather the position of its legs gives them a characteristic running motion.
Another peculiarity of the Indian Runner Duck is its shape which is described as being like a wine bottle. They also have long, snake-like necks. When wandering around they walk flat but stand upright when disturbed.
Indian Runners are a relatively small breed of duck. The ducks vary in weight between 1.4 and 2.3 kg (3.1 and 5.1 lb). Their height (from crown to tail tip) ranges from 50 cm (20 in) in small females to about 76 cm (30 in) in the taller males.
Indian Runner Ducks can be easily handled by people, especially if hand raised as pets.
Apart from excitability when disturbed (i.e. if an outside light is switched on after they have settled themselves for the night), Indian Runner Ducks don’t have any unusual personality traits.
They can be rather jumpy at times, but usually have a good nature. They can be prone to panic if cornered.
Indian Runners are prolific egg-layers, they are not very broody. The females usually lay about 150 to 200 eggs a year or more. The eggs are often greenish-white in colour.
Indian Runners have tight feathering. Drakes have a small curl on the tip of their tails, while hens have flat tails.
They often swim in ponds and streams, but they are likely to be preoccupied foraging in grassy meadows for worms, slugs, even catching flies.
They appreciate open spaces but are happy in gardens from which they cannot fly and where they make much less noise than most other breeds
Only females quack and drakes are limited to a hoarse whisper.
The Indian Runner duck is a very active and docile breed of domestic duck.
They are excellent foragers, probably the most active forager of all breeds and are good for organic pest control. While foraging, they usually cover a large area in search of seeds, insects, slugs, snails and other edibles.
They are always in a hurry.
Indian Runner duck usually require less amount of water as compared to other duck varieties. And they can get by with just a tub of water in which to dunk their heads. And they are average in terms of noise level.
Average lifespan of an Indian Runner duck is about 8-12 years.
