John Hewson took himself from a working-class part of Sydney, won his way to university, and went overseas to further his education where he met some of the world’s most eminent economists and began to think about economics, governments, and Australia. The book also finds an (occasionally) relaxed John Hewson, a side the public rarely sees. John Hewson has kept himself apart: to him it is policy not personality that matters. Dr Hewson’s political career is set in the context of Liberal politics over the last decade: a sometimes sorry story of faltering ambition, bickering and irresolution as John Howard and Andrew Peacock jostled for power.

From the inside back cover - Norman Abjorensen has written for Australia’s top newspapers in a journalistic career spanning almost 30 years. He has been national editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, a special writer for the Age, and political editor of the Sunday herald. He has contributed chapters to recent books on Australian nationalism and the electoral process, and has taught journalism at RMIT.

He worked for the Coalition for a year as adviser, is a partner in a media consultancy, and writes a daily column for the Canberra Times.

A graduate in history and politics from the University of New South Wales, Norman Abjorensen now lives outside Canberra with his wife Carmel and children Sebastion and Mairead. He lists his interests as children, music, liberalism and football.
