HSC Mathematics & Engineering Studies Tutoring || 6 Yrs of Experience
About me:
Hi, my name is James and I am offering private tutoring for Mathematics (yr 7-10, years 11-12 General, Advanced, Extension 1 & 2) and Engineering Studies (yr 11 & 12). I have over 6 years of experience in private tutoring, helping over 60 students of all backgrounds improve their marks. I have also demonstrated university classes with over 20 students and classes of high-school students.
I graduated from high school in 2017 with an ATAR of 98.85 and graduated from university in 2021 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours Class 1) at UNSW with Dean's awards in every year. I am currently pursuing my passion for STEM as a structural engineer at a reputable engineering consultancy.
Lesson Outline:
Students will be taught content that surpasses the knowledge taught at school, in addition to time management and exam strategies. I aim to enhance my student's understanding of content by diving into the nooks and crannies of the syllabus. I highlight the nuances in formulae/concepts and their application, rather than spoon-feeding them. This is contrary to the current methods of how STEM subjects are taught at high school, whereby students are told to repetitively memorise and apply mathematical formulae without thoroughly understanding them.
Lessons will be supported with printed-out sheets and homework. Prior to exams, I will provide an extension range of revision content such as past papers, and tailor questions to the student's weaknesses. I provide out-of-class help for students who are stuck on homework, which has proven beneficial to the student's growth as they do not have to wait until the next lesson for guidance. Ultimately, I strive to help students develop a deep understanding of fundamental concepts, motivate them to strive for their personal best in the HSC and achieve the ATAR required for their desired university degree.
Results:
I graduated from Fort Street High School in 2017 with a course average in Mathematics Extension 2 of 91% and 93% in Mathematics Extension 1. I achieved first place in the Mathematics Extension 2 trial exam with a raw mark of 98%.
HSC results:
- 98 in Extension 1 Maths
- 97 in Extension 2 Maths
- 94 in Engineering Studies
- 91 in Physics
University results:
I received 4 Dean's Award medals for placing in the top 1% of UNSW Engineering students. I ranked in the top 5 of my Civil Engineering cohort with a 90 weighted average mark (WAM), and achieved first place in following 6 courses:
- 100 in Civil Mechanics (CVEN1300)
- 100 in Solid Mechanics (ENGG2400)
- 98 in Engineering Computations (CVEN2002)
- 97 in Engineering Mathematics (MATH2019)
- 100 in Soil Mechanics (CVEN3202)
- 98 in Computational Structural Mechanics (CVEN9820)
Location: Lessons can be either face-to-face at my house on a whiteboard in Northmead, the student's house or online.
Reviews:
James is an awesome tutor. He really provided an intuitive understanding of deeper concepts in particular related to mathematics. He has the strong ability to convert a seemingly complex concept into an easy to understand which is rare in quite a lot of teachers to be frank. He is also a very awesome person to talk to, creating a relaxed learning environment. - Mathavan Ilankesan (Yr 12)
James is an efficient and compassionate tutor who is readily available for assistance with any problems. In the past two years he has helped me in achieving my best and has helped me gain a firm ground in engineering and physics which were my weakest subjects, through his help I was able to gain exceptionally high grades - Parth Sachdeva (Yr 12)
A wonderfully fun yet academically pushed atmosphere, James builds upon an open and cooperative tutoring approach which helped me aspire greatly within my studies. After 2 years of consistent studying under his guidance, I was able to gain huge grounds academically and prosper well as backed by the outstanding grades to show, as I studied with him - Shi
