$6.95

In the Year 2000 there were well over 1,000 million Roman Catholics. Of these two-thirds live in the developing world, more than half in Latin America alone. For the 263rd Pope, John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla), it is a momentous date. The Church that enters the new millennium will probably be led by him, and has certainly been moulded by him in a dramatic fashion. In this biography, John Paul II is revealed as one of the most influential popes in the history of the Church. As the first Slav pontiff, he has looked East as well as West from Rome, and was a major force behind the revival of Eastern Europe and the overthrow of communism.
His faith is conservative, in common with his Polish compatriots. He has drawn more and more authority back to the papacy, turning back the tide since Vatican Two. In both respects he is in opposition to the more liberal style of the West, and particularly Latin America. So whilst his charisma and public profile have won him many proud supporters throughout the world, his style of leadership has divided the Church.
Michael Walsh's fascinating book seeks to examine the convictions of the Pope, and to find out how he came to hold them. It documents the dramatic events of his papacy through to the present day. It also asks the fundamental question: will he be able to mobilise the 1,000 million Roman Catholics behind his programme of change for the Church?
