Jill Barklem spent five years on research before she started on her first stories of the mice of Brambly Hedge. Her interest in natural history and her curiosity about traditional rural customs and crafts has spilled over into these chronicles of hedgerow life.
#1 Spring Story - tiny tear to bottom and corner of dustjacket, twenty-seventh impression 1991. ISBN-10: 0001839225. The mice of Brambly Hedge are in high spirits! Fair weather and blossoms along the hedgerow have coaxed the mice out of their snug tree-stump homes, and they're eager for sunny day adventures, with old friends and new. Mr. Apple takes advantage of an idyllic spring day to plan a surprise birthday party for a cranky little mouse who fears he's been forgotten.
#2 Summer Story - tiny tear to top and corner of dustjacket, twenty-eighth impression 1992. ISBN-10: 0001839233. It was such a hot summer. All along Brambly Hedge, the mice did their best to keep cool. Poppy Eyebright sought refuge in the mossy shadows of the mill wheel; Dusty Dogwood took to walking by the banks of the cooling stream. Dusty and Poppy spent more and more time together, so no one was at all surprised when they announced their engagement.
#3 Autumn Story - gift inscription, light foxing to endpapers, twenty-sixth impression 1990. ISBN-10: 0001837397. Bad weather is on the way and the autumn crops are still not gathered in! Quickly, all the mice of Brambly Hedge set to work to finish the harvesting before the rain begins. Primrose, Lord Woodmouse's daughter, meant to help, but somehow she daydreamed her way over the cornfield and into the Chestnut Woods, and before she knew it, she was lost. The sun went down, the wind rose and it began to rain. Primrose is all alone in the dark, and she is frightened.
#4 Winter Story - light crease to front foldover, twenty-eighth impression 1992. ISBN-10: 0001837117. It was the middle of winter and very, very cold. The mice of Brambly Hedge forecasted snow. And they were right. In the morning they awoke to find their doors and windows hidden behind deep drifts. There hadn't been snow like this for years. "There's enough for a Snow Ball!" cried the mice with glee, and they set to work in the time-honoured way to make an Ice Hall for the festivities. The little mice watched wide-eyed as all the preparations were made. Then at last everything was ready, and the Ball could begin...
