MAPUCHE INDIAN TRAPELACUCHA NECKLACE ORNAMENT.
Traditional Trapelacucha neck piece from the Mapuche Indian tribe of Chili. This is a chest ornament worn by women
breast ornament (trapelakucha made by the Mapuche people of southern and central Chile history This is a traditional example made by the Mapuche people of southern and central Chile. Their extensive silversmithing tradition began in the eighteenth century when Spanish colonists introduced silver coins which they traded for Mapuche cattle. The Mapuche melted these coins down and converted them into jewellery, combining local knowledge of metal sheetwork with small-scale smelting techniques learnt from the Spanish. The ornaments became an important symbol of wealth and status and were used primarily as jewellery for women and adornments for horses. The most widespread forms were earrings (chaway), necklaces (trarilonco), breast ornaments (trapelakucha) and pins tupu (punzon) i have no way of testing knowing what if any silver content is in any of these items. above is just history of these items.
these 3 items i am listing seperatly were collected by Rev. Charles Saplaie the South American Missionary society Chile ..very old i am not going to try to date these as i am not an expert information is mostly from internet on history of this type of item.
