The 1975 Coinage of the British Virgin Islands Proof Coin Set
$80
This collector's proof coin set is a cased set of six coins in various denominations ranging from one cent to one dollar. The coins come in their original fitted case and they come complete with their Certificate of Authenticity (COA). It has the protective plastic top layer still in place as originally issued.
The COA reads: "This is to certify that the coin-of-the-realm set accompanied by this certificate is an original Proof Set of the British Virgin Islands' 1975 coinage. It was minted by The Franklin Mint under the authorisation of the government of the British Virgin Islands". It was certified on September 17, 1975 by William F. Krieg for the Franklin Mint.
The 1975 coinage of the British Virgin Islands portrays six exotic birds that are native to the Islands. The distinctive coins in this collection were designed by Gilroy Roberts, who sculpted the portrait of John F. Kennedy for the U.S. half-dollar and whose beautiful bird medals are highly prized by collectors throughout the world.
The Magnificent Frigate Bird, portrayed on the solid sterling silver one-dollar coin, has a wing-span of nearly seven feet and is one of the Islands' largest birds. It is easily identified by its raked wings and hooked beak as it glides high above the ocean searching for fish.
Another coastal bird, the Brown Pelican, is shown on the fifty-cent piece. Noted for its elastic-like pouch and remarkable fishing ability, this comical-looking bird is found all along the Islands' coastlines.
The twenty-five cent coin bears an illustration of perching Mangrove Cuckoos. Recognised by their distinctive song and flared tail feathers, the twelve-inch-high gray and brown birds are usually found in mangrove trees and shrubs.
The Belted Kingfisher is depicted on the ten-cent coin. It is readily recognisable for its conspicuous crest and the broad bluish-gray band across its chest, for which it is named. This migrating bird is familiar to the people of both the British Virgin Islands and the United States.
The Zenaida Dove, whose white-tipped wings and tail can be seen flashing across open fields as it searches for insects, is shown on the five-cent piece. Appropriately, the Green-Throated Carib and Antillean-Crested Hummingbird, two of the Islands' tiniest birds, are portrayed on the one-cent piece, the smallest coin. As they flit among the tropical flowers, these two birds delight the Islanders.
The one-dollar coin is solid sterling silver and the one-cent coin is bronze. The others are cupro-nickel. Since the British Virgin Islands is a British Crown Colony, all of its currency must be approved by Queen Elizabeth II, and the obverse of each coin must bear the official portrait of Her Majesty. The Queen gave the final approval of the designs for these beautiful British Virgin Islands coins.
Pre-owned but good condition overall. The coins are in perfect condition, but there are slight signs of wear to the cardboard and the display case. We can post this set anywhere in Australia via express post for $10.
