Pick up in Tewantin (Noosa Area) or posted
The typical plant we are selling is shown in the picture with a ruler. It is an established seedling grown plant taken from the large fruit shown in the photos. Seedling Black Sapote trees can take around 2-3 years to start flowering. Seedling trees tend to be more vigorous and end up as larger trees compared to grafted plants. Other images are for illustrative purposes only showing the flowers and fruit.
The Fruit
Black Sapote is also known as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit and is a relative of the Persimmon. When perfectly ripe the fruit is very soft like a pudding with a definite chocolatey taste to them. They can be a little hit and miss, with variation among fruit. I’ve had some Black Sapote which were absolutely divine and one of my favourite fruits. Others have been pretty ordinary. I think the key to good quality fruit is picking at the right stage and ripening it properly.
Pick the fruit when it is large and green and hard still, but only when you see the sepals start to turn up away from the fruit. Leave it inside at room temperate to ripen further, which could take another 5 days. Consume the fruit when it is very soft, and the skin has sunken in a little.
Tree Care
Black Sapote love plenty of water. They can handle temporary flooding and do well on river, creek or dam banks. Irrigation is essential in dry areas. They are not too fussy about soil type. Water it regularly and feed it with composted manures every couple of months to get it established faster. When the tree is a few years old they are quite hardly plants and won’t need much additional care. They can handle light frosts. You might want to prune it back to keep the fruit within 3m height for easier picking. Unpruned these trees can reach 10 meters tall.
