SHIPPING OFFERED
Star Apple - Chrysophyllum caimito
Pick up from Tewantin, QLD 4565. Or shipped to you (see end of post)
Native to central America, the Star Apple is a popular tropical fruit tree that can be grown on the Sunshine Coast in frost free areas.
The plant for sale is shown in photo 2. It is around 2 years old, and growing fast. It will take around 3 - 5 years to bear fruit. The other image is for illustrative purposes showing typical fruit from the star apple.
The Fruit
The Star Apple has fruit with a soft, creamy white pulp which resembles a star shape when cut in half. It has aromatic tropical sweet flavours. Some describe it as similar to apple, lychee or persimmon. Other people describe it as similar to condensed milk, in that it is both smooth and creamy and very sweet. I personally think it has a complex flavour which is similar to sweet blueberry, particularly the purple parts. It is very creamy in texture. The pulp is usually scooped out and eaten fresh. The skin and seeds are discarded.
Plant Care
Not too particular about soil type, but does need perfect drainage. Grows to 8-25m tall, but can be pruned shorter. They like a lot of water, at least weekly. Extra irrigation can improve yield during and after flowering. These trees are best adapted to hot and humid tropical climates. Temperature below 4 degrees will cause defoliation and frost can cause tree death.
