Dragon Fruit Plant - Golden Dragon Hylocereus undatus
Pick up from Tewantin, QLD 4565. Or shipped to you (see end of post)
The typical plant for sale is a rooted cutting shown in photo 2. Other images are for illustrative purposes only.
Golden Dragon is a cultivar of green and gold skinned, white fleshed H. undatus.
The Fruit
Golden Dragon produces very attractive, medium to large fruit with unique colouration of yellow skin with green fins. Not only does it have the Aussie green and gold colouration, but it also flowers and fruits close to Australia day, during late summer. The pulp colour is white, and it has a wonderful taste which is far superior to the regular pink skinned / white fleshed dragon (H. undatus). The fruit is sweet (17 brix) and with an apple-like flavour. The seeds are edible and crunchy like a kiwi. This is one of my favourite tasting dragon fruits.
Flavour: ★★★★★
Fruiting time: Mid-summer
Plant Care
Golden Dragon is a very vigorous cultivar. It is easy to grow and grows fast but can be slightly susceptible to sunburn on the hottest day of summer. This variety will not set fruit on its own and needs to be cross pollinated with a different dragon fruit variety to set fruit. The ideal pollinator is the regular pink skinned / white dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus) which flowers at the same time.
It is beneficial to hand pollinate all pitaya, guides can be found on YouTube. Pitaya need a heavy support to climb up and hang over to flower. Being a jungle cactus, they prefer regular watering as long as it drains away from the stem quickly. They prefer rich soil and monthly feeds with composted chicken manure pellets. During flowering give additional potassium (potash of sulphate) to help develop fruit.
Plant Vigour: ★★★★★
Self-pollinating: No
