Naranjilla Fruit Plant Golden Fruit of the Andes Lulo
$18
Naranjilla Plant – Golden Fruit of the Andes – Lulo Solanum quitoense
Pick up from Tewantin, QLD 4565.
The plant for sale is shown in photo 2. It is a seedling grown plant and will fruit after a few months.
The other images are for illustrative purposes only showing the fruit and the form of a larger plant.
Some people refer to them as Nectar of the gods, the Golden Fruit of the Andes are prized subtropical fruits which taste like a delicious combination of pineapple and lemon. They have edible seeds and are often eaten with ice-cream or juiced for a delightful treat. You won’t find these fruits in local stores because they need to be picked totally ripe to get the sweetest fruit otherwise it can be a little sour and they won’t keep long when fully ripe (like a tomato).
The naranjilla plant is beautiful, with large elongated heart shaped leaves up to 45 cm in length. The purple vein leaves and stems of the plant are covered in short purple hairs.
Naranjilla are delicate plants due to their massive leaves and must be protected from strong winds and direct sunlight. They grow best in partial shade and prefer a steady temperature of around 10-30 degrees. They will handle the occasional extreme heat day if they are in shade and you keep the water up to them. It grew fantastic over this winter too even with the odd colder night. I grow mine under other fruit trees in full shade and it is growing very fast.
They can be a little tricky to grow on the sunshine coast because we get a lot of days over 30 degrees in summer. You can help them through the summer by pruning them back which will force it to push out smaller leaves next time which are less stressed in the heat. Mulch it heavily and give plenty of water.
