Purple Haze is a cultivar of dragon fruit which was originally bred by Paul Thomson in the USA. He was an avid horticulturalist, rare fruit collector and one of the founders of the California Rare Fruit Growers Association.
The Fruit
They say you taste with your eyes first; Purple Haze dragon fruit would make anyone hungry with its stunning beautiful vibrant purple fruit. The fruit is large in size (over 500g) and has a high sugar content (19 - 20% brix). The flavour is sweet, tangy and grape like. The fruit is of superb quality and one of my favourites.
Flavour: ★★★★★
Fruiting time: Mid-Summer
Plant Care
Purple Haze is a very vigorous cultivar and is easy to grow. It is happy and most productive in full sun. During the hottest parts of summer, it will sometimes go a bit lime green to yellow in colour as the chlorophyll is broken down by the UV. But it doesn’t really get sunburn like some other cultivars. The yellowing can be corrected with around half a handful of magnesium sulphate (Epsom’s salts) a few weeks apart and watered in. Magnesium is an essential nutrient to produce chlorophyll.
It is beneficial to hand pollinate all Dragon Fruit, guides can be found on YouTube. Dragon Fruit need a heavy support to climb up and hang over to flower. Being a jungle cactus, they prefer regular watering as long as it drains away quickly. They prefer rich organic soil and monthly feeds with composted organic plant foods. During early spring give additional potassium (potash of sulphate) to help develop a strong bloom response and good fruit set.
Plant Vigour: ★★★★★
If you purchase one of my dragon fruit plants, I can also provide a guide on how to trellis them for growing in pots.
