Strawberry Guava Tree – Psidium cattleyanum Edible Fruit
Pick up from Tewantin, QLD 4565
A typical plant size is shown in the photo with the ruler. This plant will likely set fruit within a year. Other images are for illustrative purposes only showing you the fruit.
The Fruit
Strawberry guava fruit have an amazing taste. The entire fruit is edible including the skin which adds to the flavour profile. The soft delicate skin of the fruit adds a beautiful aromatic, floral-fruity flavour which is very characteristic of guava but particularly strong in this species. The flesh is sweet and tangy at the same time. Well worth growing these fruits because you won’t find them for sale in the supermarkets.
Plant care
Strawberry guavas very hardy plants once established. They are quite drought tolerant but do best with extra water for the highest quality fruit production. Feed every month or two with dynamic lifter and a little bit of extra potassium (pot ash) during flowering times to get the best crops with the biggest fruit. The tree will produce fruit within a year of planting. They are self-fertile. Strawberry Guava is a small, highly-branched tree that reaches a maximum height of 13 meters, although most individuals are between 2 and 4m and can be pruned to maintain size. I have mine pruned to a very compact shrub less than 1m high and 1m wide and still get abundant fruit. You do best with fruit fly bags on guavas fruit as they are highly attractive to the pests. Keep the tree small to keep it easily managed and then you can enjoy the fruit without the pests. Responds well to pruning as it will fruit on new seasons growth.
