  • The BMW 1 Series hatchback seats five people, and is comfortable and roomy enough to serve as a small family car. Families with teenagers and lots of luggage who require a bit more leg room and storage space might consider the BMW 3 Series instead.
  • The BMW 1 Series is good looking, responsive and fuel efficient and has held a five-star ANCAP safety rating since 2011. There are plenty of older models on the market with more than 150,000km on the clock, attesting to the longevity of the BMW 1 Series.
  • The BMW 1 Series has 360 L of boot space, which is good for a hatchback and on par with the Holden Astra and Volkswagen Golf. The 60/40 split rear seats fold down almost flat to increase storage capacity to 1,200 L.
  • On Gumtree you can pay up to $53,900 for a 2019 M140i or just $7,000 for a 2009 20i with relatively low km's on the clock for its age. By comparison, driving a BMW 1 Series M134i xDRIVE out of a BMW showroom will set you back $63,990.
  • BMW introduced standard satellite navigation with live traffic information to the 1 Series in 2015, with rear parking sensors, reversing camera, alloy wheels and automatic windscreen wipers.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR: BMW 1 SERIES (2011 ON)

This version of the 1 Series came along just after BMW's problems with timing-chain stretch on its 1.6-litre engine. So, these cars shouldn't exhibit this trait.

That said, BMW messed around with anything up to four different camchain-tensioner designs to solve the problem, so we'd still be having a close listen for a rattling noise on start-up.

Check the vacuum pump has been sufficiently lubricated, which supplies the assistance to the car's braking. If not, the pump could fail, leaving the car with no brake-booster. The brakes would still work, but the pedal would need an awfully big push from the driver to pull things up quickly in an emergency.

The other thing to check with the little BMW is that all the electrical accessories and do-dads work properly. That includes the sunroof and the cruise control. And make sure the air-conditioner blows icy cold.
