Selling my grandfather’s Volkswagen Polo Match 2008 as he doesn’t drive anymore. Mechanically has been a great car with no issues day-to-day. The car currently has 99k km with the next service due at 108k km. The Polo has electric windows all round, cruise control, strong Airconditioning, a radio, central locking and is very efficient on fuel. The exterior of the car has a few scratches and dents including a replaced quarter panel which is Red and the rear left door will not unlock. Regist

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR: VOLKSWAGEN POLO (2010 TO 2017)

Polos with the seven-speed DSG transmission have proven to be potentially problematic as a relatively high number of transmission faults and failures have shown up in-service.

Make sure any DSG Polo shifts smoothly and cleanly, doesn't show a strange shift pattern and doesn't shudder on take off. If it does, the gearbox could be showing signs of wear.

Both the 1.2- and 1.4-litre petrol engines can suffer stretched timing chains and these need to be replaced. The 1.4 was also fitted with a suspect batch of pistons so a compression test is a good pre-purchase idea.

The Polo with the diesel engine was also caught up in VW's Dieselgate scandal and VW dealers are still recalling these to be fitted with new software.

Check with a dealer to discover if a particular car has been fixed yet or not.
