This china plate was made in December 1903 and shows an illustration of the draper's shop built in 1898 in Emerson Street, Napier, New Zealand belonging to Councillor James Porteous Thomson. The plate was buried under the rubble after the 3 February 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake, but in two pieces. This is an antique Hock or Reisling glass wine bottle approximately 400mm high x 70mm diameter found in the Castlemaine, Victoria Goldfields. It is olive green with opalescent changes in parts of the glass which give a good indication of its age. I'm not an expert, but the marks and bubbles in the glass would suggest it was handblown and the neck then applied. A fascinating piece of Victorian history that should be in a museum.
