AN EYE-CATCHING ANTIQUE 19th CENTURY FRENCH CLOCK BY BERTHOUD, CLOCKMAKERS TO THE FRENCH KINGS
This clock is very different to your average clock.
The oak case has been extensively carved and would have taken a huge amount of skilled labour to make. The main door has grape vine themed carving and the bottom panel has a French couple carving. The carving is on the front and both sides.
The movement is made by Berthoud, a multi-generational family of clockmakers in Paris and Switzerland who were involved in the early development of accurate Marine clocks, vital to early navigation of ships. The dial is marked BERTHOUD, HOROLOGER DU ROY, PARIS [Berthoud, Clock/watchmakers to the King, Paris].
The case is in excellent condition and the movement is in very good condition. The clock strikes the number of hours, on the hour, then repeats the strikes at 2 minutes past, think of an early, automatic, version of a Snooze button, and does a single strike on the half-hour.
CONDITION: Some play in the minute hand and minimal hair cracks in the dial around the numbers 12 and 1.The pendulum is a non-original German one and has 2 minor [3mm] blemishes.
Overall in remarkably good condition.
SIZE: 226 H x 61W x 32 D cm.
I restore longcase clocks as a retirement hobby to prevent my body and brain from rusting. Hence why the lower pricing.
I was an antique dealer from the 1970s to the early 1990s and have a comprehensive knowledge of antique furniture, with a focus on longcase [grandfather] clocks.
Longcase clocks are a favourite with those looking for a special occasion gift, a gift that will be valued over generations.
