- Reverse cycle air conditioning is usually a ducted system that can be used for heating in winter as well as cooling in summer. Its versatility makes it a cost-efficient long-term investment, not to mention the fact that it's more environmentally friendly than many heaters.
Air Conditioner
Australian summer weather can sometimes get a bit uncomfortable, which makes coming home to the comfort of air conditioning all the more welcome. Especially for those who live in the southern states, split system or reverse cycle air conditioners can be an economical way to heat a home in winter as well. Split system air conditioners tend to be more affordable than retrofitting a ducted system, but if you want to air condition your whole house, ducting is worth considering, especially if you're building a new home. Although ducting is expensive, it can be cheaper to run in the long term. Read on to find out more.
Split systems and reverse cycle ducting
A reverse cycle air conditioner is ducted air con that can be used for both heating in winter and cooling in summer. Split system air conditioning gives similar results but is mounted on the wall, making for an easier installation. A 2 or 2.5 KW split system air conditioner will do a good job for a small room of up to around 20 m2 in size. It could also provide adequate heating and cooling for medium-sized rooms (up to about 40 m2). However, the insulation in your home and the direction your rooms are facing are both factors that will affect the size of split system you'll need for efficient air conditioning.
Portable air conditioners
Portable units are a great budget option and offer the flexibility of being able to be moved from room to room. Cheap portable air conditioners can be a little bit noisy, whilst high-end ones have bonus features such as dehumidifiers - which could be worth the extra cost if you live in the tropics.
