Before their restoration journey begun these sounded just awful… but blown tweeters and crossover capacitors that were now 400% (!) out of tolerance (thereby overdriving drivers with incorrect frequencies) will do that… a lesson in life for any tempted to think equipment over half a century old will perform as it was designed to with no intervention! Hard to find info on this speaker model from Sony Japan – our guess would be that they originally came as part of a Hi-Fi package. They were obviously built to a price point (the grilles are non removeable for instance), but to their credit Sony engineers created a good sounding speaker! Looks are typically late 70s, large, with a woodgrain finish, and brown grille cloth. Super rare JBL L77 speakers is really good cosmetic condition. All drivers appear to be working as are the tweeters. Speaker ‘foam’ could do with some attention - I’ve Macgyver’d one of the drivers with some rubber glue and it’s holding its own. Currently have these paired with my harman kardon citation I pre amp and a pair of quad 2 monoblocks and they sound fantastic and feel these speakers are made for low wattage amps.
