This piece is made from a large section of trunk from a Tuart tree that grew in Perth's south. Rather than see it mulched, we saved it and turned it into side tables and stools. At Workshop87 we are constantly looking for new ways to work with wood. We love Norfolk pine because of the way the branches create a spoked wheel effect within the wood. We also love the way the wood reacts when you put it into a wash of vinegar and steel wool. The tannin in the wood turns the wood black, and makes the branch spokes look like flaming comets against a night sky. Looking for a side table that is dark, brooding and beautiful? At Workshop87 we live working with old growth Red Gum, because the wood is so dark and mysterious. This side table stands 50cm tall and is 20cm square on top, with three flat cut sides and one living edge face. The wood has been seasoned for more than a decade, so won't warp or split, and now that it has been sanded smooth and waxed with beeswax, it will be a generational piece of furniture that will last at least another 200 years.
