VOLKSWAGEN KOMBI Used Car Review

Pros

Cons

  • 1960s and 1970s models are truly iconic and loaded with character
  • Ride comfort of older models
  • Larger, multi-seat interiors of modern-day Kombis
  • 2006 Kombi Beach's clever storage, front swivel seats and bed system
  • Safety and reliability of earlier models not a patch on later versions
  • Early models not cheap - and split-screen versions will cost you a motza
  • 2006 Kombi Beach accommodated only four occupants
  • Next-generation Kombi not due till 2022 (and will be electric)

1975 Kombi campervan

  • 12345 km

Hi all! Considering selling my 75 camper project as I simply haven’t got the time to work on it. This is my second Kombi restoration, for which I had the intention of adding child restraint points to accomodate my little family. Runs and drives beautifully (I was using it as my daily driver recently while waiting for my wife’s new car to arrive at the dealer), full service history, has an entirely new steel roof from sill up (including new fibreglass poptop, lifters and linings), and recently

Project Be prepared for a bit of work, I had rust done about 6 years ago. Engine has been rebuilt by me a while ago it’s not running the greatest now but still running and registered. Inside is a simple camper set up. Be noted that I am in no rush to sell this, only if I get the price it’s up for. I’ll just ignore low balls. Included is the last report from mechanic, has not been driven much since then just sitting in backyard .

VW Kombi 1966 Split Screen Westfalia Camper, Unrestored

  • 80000 km
  • Van/Mini van
  • Manual

Selling my fully imported 1966 model Westfalia camper, it has 80,000 original miles and has not been restored and has never had rust, it is an original RHD van, not a conversion, less than 20 of these SO42 RHD campers exist world wide. The outside has been repainted about 30 years ago in the original colour, it still looks good but does have some marks from use. The interior is all original, even the original Westfalia curtains from 1966. Mechanically the van has been updated with front d

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR: VOLKSWAGEN KOMBI (2005-2008)

Everybody wants a VW Kombi. Or so it seems. But the really early cars are now the realm of the hard-core enthusiasts who need to be on their toes to keep these antiques running.

Which means, that if you must have a Kombi to actually use, then the later (T5) variants are the ones to go for.

A much more modern design, these vehicles were not without their faults, starting with everything electrical.

Make sure you include the keyless locking in your inspection as a new key can cost plenty by the time it has been cut and coded to the car.

Check for oil leaks from the engine and where it meets the transmission and take a close look at the condition of all the belts and hoses under the bonnet. The oil on the dipstick should be clean and clear and not black and thick.

Make sure you check the condition of the tyres, too, as plenty of Kombi owners over the years have confused the legend of VW reliability with the reality of modern motoring.
