In 2001, the third-generation Lantra became known as the Elantra in Australia - matching up with other markets. Today, this small car is essentially the sedan version of the i30 hatchback. As with all Hyundais sold locally now, the Elantra benefits from local engineering input to ensure it suits Australian roads.

Plenty to like about the Elantra from a reliability point of view, backing up the reputation that Hyundai was trying hard to forge at this point in history.
On the interior, check that the steering wheel leather hasn't started to peel and make sure the silver highlights scattered around the cabin haven't begun to peel or flake off.
Check that the brake lights are working properly, as this was another problem for various Hyundais at this time. This was eventually traced back to a switch terminal in the wiring loom and could also lead to other problems including non-starting, inability to select a gear in the automatic version and even the cruise-control refusing to work.
Hyundai dealers were fitting a revised terminal to eliminate these problems.
